Project Title: Synthesis and characterization of nano-scale magneto-electric devices
Abstract of Project :
Transition metal oxides exhibit a spectrum of physical properties as a function of external variables such as temperature, magnetic field, electric field, light and pressure. Consequently, they have formed the basis of numerous functional devices. In this context, for my Fulbright- Nehru project, I will study multiferroicity in BiFeO3 and its composite variants. Using off-axis sputtering techniques I propose to grow nano-scale magneto-electric devices whereby magnetism can be controlled by electric field and vice-versa at room temperature. The potential technological applications of such devices include high density non-volatile memory devices, solar photovoltaics and next generation actuators and transducers.
